Getting fit with your pet can be a wonderful experience, that will help both of you stay in shape. But be careful, just like you, your pet needs to build up strength and stamina!

Start him off easy:
After years of lounging around in his basket, your pet is not instantly ready for the New York Marathon. Increase the amount of time spent walking gradually. For some very fat pooches, you might begin with simply walking to the end of the block, then gradually working up to longer walkies.

Warm up
Pets get very excited and don’t do ‘relaxed’. Every spring, veterinarians see dogs with torn muscles, painful hips, and other injuries because of over-exercise. Assess your pet’s limits and work at building his strength. Any pet needs a bit of build up, don’t just expect them to be able to run and jump like a puppy from the word go!

Assess your pets abilities!
Not all pets are good at the same stuff. All dogs will enjoy and get healthy from daily walkies, but lots of breeds make lousy running partners. Dachshunds and chihuahuas spring to mind! Be sure to exercise keeping in mind your dog’s abilities.

Have fun!
If you enjoy it and show pride in your dog, you’ll both have so much fun!
